Position Summary

Thousands of Minnesota kids need help in reading and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for the students of Minnesota.

As a Scholar Squad Tutor, you’ll serve virtually with children ages 3-5 to build skills and get ready for Kindergarten and with students in grades K-3 to become better readers. With great training and continual coaching, we’ll prepare you to work one-on-one to help kids develop their reading skills and confidence! 

We are currently recruiting for the 2020-21 school year. Tutors have the option of beginning in November 2020 or January 2021.  

This is an AmeriCorps member position with Minnesota Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You’ll join an amazing group of more than 1,500 Minnesota tutors, determined to help students be more.

What to Expect

Be the literacy support specialist for a network of students and families. Spend your days helping children play rhyming games, write their names, learn letter sounds and read their first story! Be the reason students are successful readers!

Be the reason struggling students build their confidence and skills.

   •
Be ready to grow by participating in coaching sessions to review student progress and get feedback.

   •
Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development.

   •
Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.


Perks Package

Give your time as a tutor and you’ll receive a scalable perks package based on your time commitment of 25 or 18 hours per week.
Perks at 25 Hours a Week:

   •
Stipend (paid every two weeks) - $465

   •
Education Award - $2,321*

Federal Student Loan Forbearance & Interest Repayment


Perks at 18 Hours a Week:

   •
Stipend (paid every two weeks) - $355

   •
Education Award - $1,612*

*The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild or foster child.

What it Takes

Great tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are 18 or 85, the most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service.


   •
Are dependable and have a history of good attendance

   •
Able to understand and follow instructions

   •
Access to reliable internet that supports live video conferencing

   •
Are energized by young learners and want to help them discover new things.

   •
Eager to work collaboratively with the classroom teaching team.




   •
Have proficient computer skills (like email and navigating online)




   •
Can speak, read, and write English fluently

   •
18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent

   •
A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States*

   •
Have served three or fewer terms with AmeriCorps State or National Program

   •
Agree to and successfully complete a background check



*Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
