A Preschool Literacy Tutor – Educator Corps is a current employee (classroom teacher, para or aid) of the service site where they serve. The tutor serves in a classroom of children ages 3 – 5 to develop children’s early literacy skills in preparation for kindergarten. Tutors are trained in research-based early literacy strategies and collaborate with the classroom teaching staff to enhance daily literacy opportunities and conduct literacy assessments to increase the number of children on target with early reading predictors. This is an AmeriCorps service member position with the AmeriCorps program, Minnesota Reading Corps.
Early Literacy Instruction and Assessment
Early development of key mathematics skills, in addition to reading proficiency, is a predictor of later success. Experts in mathematics have uncovered a strong connection between skills measured in preschool and math achievement at age 15. As a result, a very small subsection of Professional Corps members in the Twin Cities will participate in the School Readiness pilot project.
• Integrate the following concepts into daily interventions with children in their classroom: 1) subitizing, 2) object counting, 3) number after knowledge, 4) comparisons (counting), 5) comparisons (mental), and 6) the concept of the number-after equals one more.
Reading Corps will not discriminate for or against any AmeriCorps service member or applicant based on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, age, or any other category protected by law.
