This position is part of an innovative project to provide early literacy support to children in Licensed Family Child Care provider settings. The tutor travels to Licensed Family Child Care provider sites to provide a 1.5-2 hour Reading Corps “mini-preschool” session to build children’s early language and literacy skills in preparation for Kindergarten. The tutor will work with three Licensed Family Child Care providers and will visit each provider twice a week. This position allows tutors to play a more active role in supporting their providers so that providers can implement the curriculum and interventions on days tutor is not visiting. Tutors will primarily serve morning hours, with a few afternoons each month dedicated to coaching sessions.
Early Literacy Instruction and Assessment
- Provide intentional, meaningful, and fun literacy instruction during all parts of the day to improve the early literacy skills of children ages 3 – 5, specifically focusing on the “Big Five Emergent Literacy Skills” that give children the opportunity to talk, read, write and play every day; deliver adapted strategies for infants and toddlers.
- Implement elements of the Literacy and Math Rich Schedule, including greeting children, helping children write their name at sign-in, having “Strive for 5” conversations, writing a daily message, conducting a Repeated Read Aloud, journaling, leading one-on-one and/or small group targeted interventions daily for at-risk children, and leading “Big 5” transitions.
- Provide targeted early literacy support to children daily in a one-on-one and/or small group setting using scripted early literacy interventions; achieve a high degree of fidelity to the scripted interventions.
- Assess, with high level of accuracy, child outcomes and progress using tri-annual benchmark assessments and ongoing progress monitoring assessments.
- Identify students who qualify for targeted one-on-one and/or small group Minnesota Reading Corps tutoring services based on assessment data and direction from a Family Child Care Coach.
- Record student and program data completely and accurately in an online database on a weekly basis; maintain confidentiality of all student data.
- Participate in on-site coaching sessions (includes observation of tutor) two times per month to review student progress, plan, problem-solve and set goals; act on constructive feedback from coaching sessions.
- Prepare materials and lessons for effective delivery of daily essential elements of the Reading Corps Lesson Plans for Family Child Care.
Early Literacy Resource to Licensed Family Child Care Provider
Serve as an early literacy resource to the Licensed Family Child Care Provider to support high-quality programming for children in their care. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Ongoing collaboration with each assigned Provider.
- Developing a relationship of respect and trust, particularly understanding the unique role and challenges faced by Licensed Family Child Care Providers.
- Supporting the creation and implementation of a Literacy and Math Rich Schedule to provide daily structure that incorporates evidenced-based rituals and routines for each Provider.
- Supporting the Provider’s implementation of the Reading Corps Lesson Plans for Family Child Care
- Modeling delivery of targeted interventions and evidence-based strategies.
Collaborate with Coach and Licensed Family Child Care provider to plan, prepare, and facilitate family nights with each site.
- Implement family engagement strategies during the year as children transition and prepare for Kindergarten, including implementing the Minnesota Reading Corps family intervention “Talk, Read and Write with Me!”.
- Develop a Kindergarten Student Portfolio for each student.
- Communicate and interact with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way.
- Act on constructive feedback provided by Coaches and Program Staff.
- Build professional relationships and communicate regularly with Licensed Family Child Care Provider, Coach, and Program Staff regarding schedules, literacy strategies, student progress, etc.
- Communicate effectively with Minnesota Reading Corps staff and site personnel
- Regular, timely attendance at assigned sites during schedules hours, Monday-Friday.
- Commitment to the entire term(s) of service, including making regular and adequate progress toward the minimum total service hours required by the Member Service Agreement.
- Attend all required Reading Corps sponsored training sessions, meetings, and coaching sessions, including Professional Learning Groups (PLGs) and Member Meet Ups (when applicable); travel as necessary. Training includes a minimum of one evening per month (6pm-9pm).
- Support additional tasks and duties as assigned by the Family Child Care staff and Coaches excluding activities that would displace the Licensed Family Child Care Provider or Family Child Care Staff and Coaches.
- Represent Reading Corps at site-sponsored activities, meetings, and other activities (e.g., family night) and provide education about the Reading Corps and general literacy awareness.
- Actively participate in service projects and commemorating days such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (as applicable). These may include evening and/or weekend hours.
