All positions require availability, every day, Monday- Friday during regular school hours.

Our goal is to help all Minnesota children become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade and give them a better start to their futures. If you are passionate about education and literacy, join us and make a difference in the lives of preschool and elementary students. Become a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor and help struggling readers, age 3 to grade 3, get on track for reading at grade level. We’ll provide training to get you started and ongoing coaching so you’ll be supported throughout your term of service.

Responsibilities

Community Corps Lead are embedded into PreK centers to provide specific targeted coaching to approximately 6 Preschool Literacy Tutors serving within a maximum of 6 classrooms. Community Corps Lead are trained in research-based early literacy strategies and collaborate with the Internal Coach to ensure coaching, daily literacy opportunities and literacy assessments are performed at a high level of integrity by the tutors in turn ensuring that children ages 3 to 5 have the early literacy skills they need to be prepared for Kindergarten.

 

  • Observe classrooms and facilitate coaching sessions two times per month with each tutor. Provide support and feedback to the Internal Coach regarding classroom wide literacy performance.
  • Collaborate with the Internal Coach, tutor(s), and teaching team, to implement the Response to Intervention data-based decision making model to review data and set goals including the following: 1) identify potential children in need of services; 2) define competencies and needs of identified children; 3)explore potential solutions for supporting identified children’s developmental growth; 4) implement these solutions and monitor children’s progress; and 5) evaluate and modify services in order to optimize children’s developmental trajectories
  • Use the Early Literacy and Language Classroom (ELLCO) Observation tool in the fall and spring to assess classrooms and collaborate in planning in order for classroom to receive a “Basic” or “Better” score on the ELLCO by spring
  • Support the tutor in implementing the family literacy intervention – Talk, Read, and Write with Me!
  • Supports the tutor(s) in accurately reporting student data, including demographic, progress monitoring and benchmarking scores by the deadline
  • Build professional relationships and communicate regularly with tutor, classroom teachers, Internal Coach, and the Master Coach regarding schedules, literacy strategies, student progress, etc.
  • Attend 3 days of mandatory training prior to service with students, plus additional required training sessions throughout the year. Tutors will receive the consistent support of an onsite coach. Some travel may be necessary to attend training.
  • Participate in site-sponsored activities such as book fairs and family nights

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in education, specifically in helping PreK students develop their early literacy and Kindergarten-readiness skills
  • Dedication to community service and ability to commit to a full term of service
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email
  • Attention to detail
  • Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated, and professional
  • Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff
  • Excellent time management and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and adapt to the school environment
  • Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics, and integrity

Eligibility Requirements

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently
  • Age 18 or older by the program start date
  • Possess a high school diploma or a GED by the program start date
  • Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States

Please note:

Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.

 

Currently, AmeriCorps members are limited to four terms of service.


Tutors are paid a modest living allowance every two weeks during their service term and receive an education award upon successful completion which may be used to pay qualified student loans or tuition. Tutors over age 55 may choose to gift their education award to their child or grandchild. Tutors may be eligible for health insurance, child care assistance, and student loan forbearance during their service.
